Contact tip to workpiece distance

MIG-hitsausharjoitus kurssilla

MIG/MAG Welding basics for beginners and less experienced welders.
Fine-tune the welding process with contact-tip-to-workpiece distance.

Just to clarify: although here I am talking about moving the contact tip or nozzle, in reality, you're moving the entire welding torch.

You can influence welding current —and therefore the welding power being used— by moving the torch nozzle closer or farther from the workpiece while welding. A common beginner mistake is keeping the nozzle too far away. In fact, the most repeated instruction I give during courses is: "Move the nozzle closer!"

– When you pull the nozzle farther away, the melting of the weld gets weaker, resulting in a higher and more round weld—essentially, you're using less welding power.
– When you push the nozzle closer, it increases the intensity of the weld, creating a flatter weld bead—you're utilizing more welding power.

The change isn’t explosively dramatic, but it does have a clear impact. And if the nozzle is too far away, it will completelly ruin the weld, leaving only a trail of weak, bead-like droplets on the surface.

– When creating a long constant weld, nozzle distance can be adjusted to fine-tune the weld and bead shape.
– Simply changing the torch angle alters the distance from the contact tip to the weld pool, which in turn affects welding current.
– When tacking, push the nozzle as close as possible to the workpiece. This ensures stronger fusion and better adhesion between the pieces.

Suuttimen etäisyys kaukana ja lähellä
On the left, the nozzle is too far away. On the right, the nozzle has an ideal distance for tack welding.
For actual welding, the nozzle should be moved a few millimeters farther away.

In common workshop situations repair welding will offer you moments when adjusting nozzle distance can save you in many cases. The wall thickness of the workpiece and the gap between pieces often vary. By adjusting nozzle distance on the fly, you can control the intensity of the welding process. When the gap increases or the material gets thinner, pull the nozzle slightly farther away. When the gap closes or the material is thicker, push the nozzle closer. This simple adjustment can often determine whether you burn through the material or not. However, keep in mind that these changes should be in millimeters, not centimeters.

You can easily test the effect of nozzle distance during your next practice session. While welding, smoothly (but noticeably—don’t be shy) move the nozzle closer and farther away. You’ll quickly see the difference.

Suuttimen etäisyyden muutos käytännössä
The entire "weld" has been made in a single pass, adjusting only the nozzle distance.
Green area: The nozzle was kept in the right distance.
Yellow area: The nozzle is starting to be too far away — this is the most common mistake range among beginners.
Red area: The nozzle is much too far, resulting in a pile of beads instead of a proper weld—another frequent beginner mistake.
Myöskin yleinen aloittelijan virhealue.
